Part of an Art Trade with *Symrea, her character Angel! :la:

Done in watercolors, roughly 5h. The scanner ruined all the colours so this is very heavily edited and probably ended up a bit over-saturated.

Do you think the background color is too extreme btw? I'm trying to understand color theory and thought it might be neat to use complementaries. I'm not sure if it really works so well though.
Advice would be greatly appreciated (!), but please only from someone who can actually explain the theory behind it and not just tell me that it looks shitty, thanks c:

I don't think the background colour looks too extreme (I think it's rather beautiful actually) I just don't think the yellow-orange was integrated enough into the character itself, again white being such a reflective colour (this is such a late comment probably you don't want to hear any critique by now x'D) I really like how you did the paws and claws, especially its left paw- I've never been that great at drawing more realistic paws, especially with longer toes and larger claws, but this has inspired me to try!

Yes, I completely agree with you. More yellow shine on the character itself would definitely look better but I'm wondering how to do that :/ If you look closely you can see some yellow-ish highlight thingies on it's face and wings -but that doesn't look very good.
Oh yay! Do show them pics when you did some! -and welcome back to dA

I agree! The use of the orange was a very smart idea! Not only does it make the blue stand out more, but it also give color to the piece, without it the picture would just be white, blues, greys, and maybe a touch of purple, not very eye catching in my opinion. I just love it this way!

HOLY CRAP SHE IS FREAKING AMAZING!!! I love the blue shade you've generated, you've got it spot on! Her paws are absoloutely stunning, her wings are fantasmical, the shading is perfect and the proportioning between her legs and her body are spot on.

And the sunset completely makes it all work out amazingly! I was writing my book with her in and now I'm going to have to include a scene with her sitting on that rock gazing out to the sky! And how on earth did you know that she loves sitting on clifftops gazing out to the sky? I mean you've even got her personality right!

This is so going to be the background for my Iphone and my computer.

So beautiful, I love the splash of oranges, it really makes the blue in the character pop! :wow:
